The Best Fluffy Pancakes recipe you will fall in love with. Full of tips and tricks to help you make the best pancakes.
The best Nintendo Switch controllers often aren’t the ones that come with the console. While the Joy-Cons that come with non-Lite Switch models are convenient because of their detachable, wireless design, they tend to be uncomfortable for longer gaming sessions, especially for those with larger hands. Although Nintendo has worked to address issues like Joy-Con drift and early quality control problems, some issues still persist.
In this guide, we’ll focus on wireless controllers that offer comfort, reliability, and unique features tailored to different gaming styles. We won’t be covering wired controllers that connect to the Switch’s dock, as they don’t offer significant savings and tend to be quite basic. (PowerA and PDP make decent wired options if you need one, but unless you strongly prefer not to recharge your controllers, going wireless is usually a better choice.)
If you choose to buy a third-party wireless controller (one not made by Nintendo), there are a few features it may lack unless stated otherwise:
- No HD Rumble: Nintendo’s advanced haptic feedback, which is more precise and subtle, is often missing in third-party controllers. Some may have basic rumble, but it won’t match the precision of Nintendo’s or Sony’s haptics.
- Limited Motion Controls: Many third-party controllers don’t include motion controls for gestures or gyroscopic aiming, though newer models are starting to implement these features with mixed results.
- No NFC Reader: Most non-Nintendo controllers don’t have an NFC reader, which is required for scanning Amiibo cards or figurines that unlock special in-game features.
- Cannot Turn on Switch Remotely: Most third-party options won’t allow you to turn on the console remotely, meaning you’ll need to press the power button on the Switch itself.
- No Wireless Audio: While some controllers have 3.5mm headphone jacks, you won’t be able to get audio from them wirelessly. However, connecting Bluetooth headphones directly to the Switch is an easy workaround for most people.
If you usually play your Switch while it’s docked, the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is a great choice. It covers almost all the important features — except for the 3.5mm audio jack — and it’s one of the most comfortable controllers available. For those who prefer an Xbox-style controller with lots of customization, the GuliKit KingKong 2 Pro is an excellent option. If you enjoy playing in handheld mode, the Hori Split Pad Pro offers a more comfortable experience. Finally, for PC-friendly gaming, 8BitDo’s Ultimate Bluetooth Controller and Pro 2 (which has a design similar to Sony’s DualShock) are both well worth considering.
Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, released in 2017 alongside the Switch console, remains one of the best options for gamers, thanks to its comfort and feature-packed design. It stands out with features like HD rumble, motion controls, and NFC, making it not only versatile but also one of the most comfortable controllers available for the Switch.
Specifications:
- Supported Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PC, Steam Deck, mobile, Apple TV
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, wired
- Connector Type: USB-C
- Mappable Rear Buttons: No
- Software Customization: No
- Rumble: Yes, HD
- NFC: Yes
- Motion Controls: Yes
- Power Source: Built-in rechargeable battery
- Console Wakeup Feature: Yes
Even after more than seven years, the Switch Pro Controller is still considered the best gamepad for the Switch. Designed as a more traditional alternative to the Joy-Cons, this controller competes with Sony and Microsoft in terms of both comfort and durability.
Beyond the Joy-Cons, it’s the only wireless controller that offers HD rumble, motion support, and an NFC reader for Amiibo cards and figurines. Plus, it’s the only controller (besides the Joy-Cons) that can wake up the Switch wirelessly. Built with a solid, durable design, its battery life is impressive—lasting around 40 hours on a single charge, meaning casual gamers may go days or even weeks before needing to recharge.
The buttons and triggers offer a satisfying bounce, while the D-pad is responsive and perfect for retro gaming enthusiasts. Charging is done via USB-C, which is convenient since it’s the same as the Switch console itself. Beyond the Switch, the Pro Controller is compatible with a variety of other platforms like PC, Android, SteamOS, and even Apple devices running the latest versions of iOS, macOS, tvOS, and visionOS.
While it’s a great controller, a few extra features would have been welcome at its price point, such as programmable buttons or a 3.5mm headphone jack. Unfortunately, wireless audio through the controller isn’t possible for the Switch yet, although you can connect wireless headphones via Bluetooth—just keep in mind you’ll be limited to using two controllers at once when doing so.
Hori Split Pad Pro
Hori Split Pad Pro is a unique alternative to the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, designed specifically for those who prefer to play in handheld mode. This controller splits into two separate pieces, sliding into the sides of the Switch console like Joy-Cons, making it a comfortable option for gamers looking for something different.
Specifications:
- Supported Platforms: Nintendo Switch
- Connectivity: Wired
- Connector Type: Joy-Con slots
- Mappable Rear Buttons: Yes
- Software Customization: No
- Rumble: No
- NFC: No
- Motion Controls: No
- Power Source: Via Joy-Con slots
- Console Wakeup Feature: No
While some may enjoy using Joy-Con controllers, many find them less comfortable, particularly for extended gameplay. That’s where the Hori Split Pad Pro shines. It comes in a variety of color options and mimics the feel of a traditional Switch Pro Controller, but split into two halves for easy handling.
The design features larger, easy-to-reach buttons, generous triggers, and comfortable analog sticks, all of which enhance the gaming experience. It also offers a solid grip, which is helpful for maintaining control during fast-paced gameplay or long sessions.
However, it’s important to note that the Split Pad Pro lacks batteries and sensors, meaning it can’t be used when detached from the Switch. It’s strictly for handheld mode unless you invest in the Split Pad Pro Attachment, which turns it into a wired controller. Be aware that this attachment can cost more than a Switch Pro Controller, and while it does add a 3.5mm headphone jack, it doesn’t include features like rumble or motion controls.
For those interested in a more compact option, Hori also offers the Split Pad Compact, which is a smaller version of the Split Pad Pro, typically priced around $50. This may be a good choice if you’re looking for something more Joy-Con-sized while still being functional. Currently, it’s on sale at Target for about $32.49, providing a great alternative for gamers on a budget.
GuliKit KingKong 2 Pro
If you’re in the market for a versatile Switch controller that also works seamlessly with PC, Mac, Steam Deck, iOS, and Android, the GuliKit KingKong 2 Pro is an excellent choice. This controller features drift-free Hall effect analog sticks, Amiibo support, and provides a feel reminiscent of an Xbox controller.
Specifications:
- Supported Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PC, Steam Deck, mobile, Apple TV
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, wired
- Connector Type: USB-C
- Mappable Rear Buttons: No
- Software Customization: No
- Rumble: Yes
- NFC: Yes
- Motion Controls: Yes
- Power Source: Built-in rechargeable battery
- Console Wakeup Feature: Yes
The GuliKit KingKong 2 Pro matches the build quality of the Switch Pro Controller, but it offers a more Xbox-like feel, complete with textured rear grips for better handling. One of its standout features is Amiibo support, although some users have reported issues with non-authentic Amiibo products. It connects easily via Bluetooth to the Switch and a variety of other devices, and thanks to GuliKit’s Hall effect sensors in the analog sticks, it is designed to be immune to drift.
The Hall effect sensors work by using magnets to alter electrical current rather than relying on physical contact, which can wear down traditional sensors over time. This means that while drift issues are not widespread with the Switch Pro Controller, using Hall effect sensors ensures you’ll never have to deal with them—a peace of mind worth the investment.
When it comes to controls, the KingKong 2 Pro feels just right. The face buttons, bumpers, and D-pad offer a nice balance of travel and tactile feedback. The analog sticks are smooth and responsive, snapping back into place effortlessly, even when clicked off-axis. While the Xbox-inspired shape contributes to its ergonomic design, GuliKit deserves credit for using sturdy materials and achieving a well-balanced weight.
Customization is another strong point for this controller. You can swap button layouts, program macros, and adjust rumble intensity and trigger sensitivity. However, managing these settings can be a bit tricky, as they require specific button combinations to change. While these combos are straightforward, memorizing them may be a challenge. Fortunately, GuliKit provides a detailed manual to guide you through the process.
GuliKit also offers the KingKong 3 Pro and KingKong 3 Max models. The 3 Pro enhances the KingKong 2 Pro by adding four slots for detachable rear buttons or paddles (two included) and a 1,000Hz polling rate for improved responsiveness. The 3 Max is similar but includes three pairs of back buttons (with short and long styles) and allows for a 10-minute macro recording limit, compared to 10 seconds on the 3 Pro. It also features a dedicated trigger mode switch, RGB lights around the analog sticks indicating sensitivity modes, and NFC for Amiibo support.
While we haven’t yet tested the new GuliKit models, we plan to review them soon, so stay tuned for updates! Overall, the GuliKit KingKong 2 Pro is a robust and reliable controller that offers great versatility across multiple platforms, making it a worthwhile addition to any gamer’s collection.
8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth Controller
8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth Controller stands out as a versatile gaming controller that caters to a variety of platforms, including the Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, and Windows PCs. It comes equipped with its own charging dock, remappable controls, and features advanced technology for a superior gaming experience.
Specifications:
- Supported Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PC, Steam Deck, mobile, Apple TV
- Connectivity: 2.4GHz, Bluetooth, wired
- Connector Type: USB-C
- Mappable Rear Buttons: Yes
- Software Customization: Yes
- Rumble: Yes
- NFC: No
- Motion Controls: Yes
- Power Source: Built-in rechargeable battery
- Console Wakeup Feature: No
8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth Controller is designed similarly to the Switch Pro Controller, featuring a compact grip profile that may not be ideal for larger hands. It excels with full Steam Deck compatibility, which is a notable advantage over many other controllers. While its haptic feedback is decent, it doesn’t quite match the quality of Nintendo’s controllers, and it lacks Amiibo support. However, it compensates with customizable back paddles and motion controls. A hidden feature also allows users to wake a docked Switch by shaking the controller.
One of the standout features is the included charging dock, which conveniently stores the 2.4GHz dongle when not in use. The controller boasts a 22-hour battery life, which, while respectable, falls short of the 40-hour battery life offered by Nintendo’s official controller.
Among the various variants available, the Bluetooth model is highly recommended over the 2.4GHz or wired versions due to its dual connectivity options and the inclusion of GuliKit Hall effect sticks, which prevent drift—a common issue in many controllers. The analog sticks are designed for comfort, featuring just the right amount of resistance and a concave top, although they might feel slightly short on the sides. The buttons offer excellent travel, and the analog triggers have a satisfying resistance.
Customization options are extensive. You can adjust button mapping profiles, set up macros, and tweak vibration intensity and stick/trigger sensitivity through the Ultimate Software app available on mobile or PC. The controller includes a dedicated button for swapping between three profiles on the fly, as well as an extra turbo button that can be remapped to suit your gaming style.
8BitDo Pro 2
8BitDo Pro 2 is an excellent alternative to the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, offering many similar features at a more affordable price, all while incorporating a DualShock-style layout.
Specifications:
- Supported Platforms: Switch, PC, Steam Deck, mobile, Apple TV, Raspberry Pi
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, wired
- Connector Type: USB-C
- Mappable Rear Buttons: Yes
- Software Customization: Yes
- Rumble: Yes
- NFC: No
- Motion Control: Yes
- Power: Built-in rechargeable battery
- Console Wakeup: No
- Price: $50 (or $54.99 for special translucent editions)
The 8BitDo Pro 2 features Hall effect analog sticks, ensuring durability and drift-free performance, making it particularly appealing for long gaming sessions. Its design prioritizes comfort, boasting an ergonomic grip that fits well in hand. The controller also features a crisp D-pad that outperforms the Switch Pro Controller and includes two easily accessible paddle buttons on the underside for added functionality.
In terms of gaming capabilities, the Pro 2 supports rumble (though it lacks HD rumble) and motion controls, enhancing gameplay experiences in titles like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Overwatch 2, which utilize gyroscopic aiming.
A standout feature of the 8BitDo Pro 2 is its customizable options. With the 8BitDo Ultimate software available on mobile or Windows, users can remap buttons, adjust trigger and stick sensitivity, and save up to three different control profiles, easily accessible through a dedicated button located between the analog sticks. Additionally, there is a switch on the back that allows users to toggle between various modes, including Nintendo Switch, X-input for PC, DirectInput, and macOS, each with its own customized controls and Bluetooth profiles.
At a price of $50 (or $54.99 for the eye-catching translucent color options), the 8BitDo Pro 2 offers a robust and versatile gaming experience, making it a fantastic value for gamers looking for an adaptable controller that bridges the gap between Switch and PlayStation-style gaming.
8BitDo Wireless Bluetooth USB Adapter 2
8BitDo Wireless Bluetooth USB Adapter 2 is a compact solution that transforms your existing Bluetooth controllers into wireless gamepads for the Nintendo Switch, providing great value for gamers looking to enhance their gameplay experience without breaking the bank.
Specifications:
- Form Factor: USB Adapter (similar to a flash drive)
- Compatibility: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox controllers
- Supported Controllers: Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One Bluetooth controllers, PS5 DualSense, PS4 DualShock 4, and Switch Pro Controller
- Customization: Button mapping and analog stick sensitivity adjustments via app
- Price: $19.99
Instead of purchasing multiple controllers for your Switch, 8BitDo Wireless Bluetooth USB Adapter 2 offers an economical alternative at just $19.99. It plugs directly into your Switch dock and enables wireless pairing with a wide range of controllers, including newer models like the Xbox Series X and S controllers, as well as older ones from PlayStation 3 and Wii.
In our testing, the PS5 DualSense controller performed exceptionally well with the adapter, delivering superior rumble effects and responsive motion controls that often outshine dedicated Switch controllers. Moreover, users can customize button mappings and adjust analog stick sensitivity through 8BitDo’s computer and mobile app, enhancing the overall gaming experience.
8BitDo provides a comprehensive support page detailing the setup process for various controllers and highlighting the specific features available for each one. However, users should familiarize themselves with the Switch’s button layout since the button configurations on PlayStation or Xbox controllers do not align with the on-screen prompts during gameplay.
For those who already own a controller they enjoy, 8BitDo Wireless Bluetooth USB Adapter 2 is a worthwhile addition to any gaming setup. If you plan to use multiple third-party controllers simultaneously, keep in mind that you’ll need an individual adapter for each controller along with a USB hub. Nevertheless, for gamers with several controllers lying around, this adapter offers an attractive and practical solution for accessing a variety of gaming experiences on the Switch.
Other Switch controllers
Nitro Deck or Nitro Deck Plus
We really like the CRKD Nitro Deck here! It’s a cradle-style controller designed to hold your Nintendo Switch securely between two Hall effect sticks. This controller comes with a standard set of face buttons, four back buttons that you can program to your liking, turbo functionality, gyro motion controls, and rumble features.
One cool feature is passthrough charging, which means you can charge your Switch while using the controller. However, it doesn’t support passthrough video, so you can’t use it as a dock for playing games on your TV. If you’re looking for more features, the Nitro Deck Plus is a step up. It includes passthrough video with a USB-C to HDMI adapter, Bluetooth connectivity, and adjustable vibration intensity and analog sensitivity.
While we’ve noticed these improvements, we do wish the passthrough solution was more refined. Additionally, there are some ergonomic concerns, especially on the right side, where the placement of the analog stick and buttons can be uncomfortable to use for extended periods.
GameSir T4 Cyclone Pro
We recently tested the GameSir T4 Cyclone Pro, priced at $49.99, to see how it stacks up. This controller has many features similar to the GuliKit KingKong 2 Pro, including remappable buttons, Hall effect sticks, and two macro buttons. However, it also boasts dedicated vibration motors in the triggers, which is a feature the GuliKit lacks.
Despite these advantages, the GameSir T4 Cyclone Pro falls short in one area: the buttons feel a bit mushy. GameSir markets the extra padding under the buttons as a feature that softens the impact, but we found it detracted from our overall experience.
Additionally, while the controller works well with the Nintendo Switch, its button labeling is similar to Microsoft’s layout, which might confuse some users who struggle to memorize the button placements. We also encountered some frustration with the resyncing process when switching from a mobile device or Windows PC back to the Switch.
GameCube Style Wireless Controller
We also recently tested several wireless controllers from PowerA, including the GameCube Style Wireless Controller and a Pikachu-themed version of the standard PowerA Enhanced Wireless, both priced at $59.99. While we appreciate the fun designs of PowerA’s controllers, they don’t quite match the quality of the other models we’ve recommended, which is disappointing, especially since some of them cost nearly the same.
The GameCube-style wireless controller does a good job of recreating the original, making it a great choice for fans of Super Smash Bros. However, it’s pretty basic—it lacks features like rumble, NFC, and IR capabilities. If you’re looking to recapture that old-school feeling and don’t already have a Bluetooth-based alternative, this controller is an easy way to do so, especially when paired with 8BitDo’s USB Adapter 2.
How to choose the best Nintendo Switch controller?
While the Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Cons are great controllers right out of the box, some players find them a bit small when using the console in docked mode. Plus, they can develop stick drift over time, which is why you might want to consider getting one of the best Nintendo Switch controllers from our list instead.
When choosing the right controller for your Nintendo Switch, there are a few important factors to keep in mind. First, think about whether you prefer a wired controller or if you want the freedom of playing wirelessly from your couch. Next, consider how you like to play—do you enjoy handheld mode, or do you prefer gaming on one of the best TVs?
Button layout is another crucial aspect to think about. Luckily, you can choose between controllers that have a Switch style or a GameCube style. Similarly, when it comes to joysticks, some players like staggered joysticks, while others prefer asymmetrical ones. The best part about the Nintendo Switch is that there are plenty of different controller options available to suit your preferences!
How we test the Best Nintendo Switch controllers?
Just like we do with the best PC game controllers, we’ve put all the Nintendo Switch controllers on this list—and the ones we review—through extensive hands-on testing. This involves using the controllers to play various types of games in handheld, tabletop, and docked modes. We also explore their special features, such as programmable back buttons and motion controls, and check if they can wake the Nintendo Switch from sleep mode.
In addition to hands-on testing, we connect the best Nintendo Switch controllers to a PC and use Hardware Tester’s Gamepad Tester to ensure that all the buttons and joysticks are functioning correctly. For multiplatform Switch controllers, we also test them on all the systems they support. If you’re interested in more details about our testing process, you can check out our “how we test” page on BongoInfo.
